Throughout the last 20 years there has been many positives with the growth of technology and the internet. But with this there has also been some negative aspects of it too such as cyberbullying. With the rise of social media it has become easier for students to communicate with each other. This poses a problem because now it is easier for students to bully each other. Since there are not consequences for their online actions, students feel as if they are invincible. So schools should step in and do something about it. Schools should limit online speech because it has become a widespread problem, it can disrupt the learning environment, and it affect people’s lives.
In today’s society almost every teenager has a cell phone and has access to social media. With this comes the ability for teenagers to bully each other because it is in our human nature to judge others. In 2007 during the rise of Facebook the Supreme Court ruled schools could punish speech off schools grounds in Morse v. Frederick. This specifically pertains to cyberbullying because it is all online and doesn’t take place on schools grounds. A surveyed was conducted with 4,374 students about cyberbullying (Doc A). From those 4,374 students almost 42 percent of them reported being bullied in their lifetime (Doc A). Out of that 42 percent 25 of them were girls, so 1 in 4 girls from this survey reported being bullied in their lifetime (Doc A). This survey was just from one school district, so if this many students are being bullied then think of the thousands that are being bullied all over the country. Students are not the only ones though, in a survey conducted with British school teachers about 15 percent of them reported being bullied. Out of that 15 percent 38 percent of them had lowered self-esteem because of the cyberbullying. If teachers are having these negative feelings then they are not able to fulfill their roles as educators. This then results in students not receiving the education they guaranteed by the 14th amendment. Over the years many students have had trouble focusing in the classroom. It has been said by the Supreme

The teenage years can be rough with learning how to act like an adult and how to fit into society. Some teenagers may use outlets to deal with this stress such as alcohol, drugs or even bullying (Effects of Bulling). If life is not treating someone well then they may feel compelled to take their anger out on someone else which is how cyberbullying can happen. In Document E this is shown with a teacher who is saying that is privacy and dignity have been stripped away from him because of cyberbullying. The principal's response is what did they steal this time money, credit cards. In this cartoon the message is that privacy and dignity is something that is worth so much more than those other things. This is a major problem with cyberbullying is people do not know what the effect of that one comment can have on someone and how it can impact their life. Some of the effects that bullying can have on people is depression and increased feelings and sadness and loneliness (Effects of Bullying). So if someone is starting to endure these feelings how can they focus on school? They can’t and schools needs to do something about

In sum, the issue is whether schools should give students less privacy in school or teens should have more privacy in school. My own view is that teens should have more privacy when in school. Though I concede that not giving teens more privacy can help in some ways like in their grades and trying to stop cyber bullying, I still maintain that teens should have more privacy at school. For example, students joke and play around with each other a great deal and say things they don’t really mean so school shouldn’t be looking over the students’ media or through the webcam of their computers. Although some might object that how will the school know the students are joking around with each other or whether what they are saying is real or not, I reply that you can call them down and just have one on one talks about why they are saying the things they are and not go into the student's privacy like their computers, phones or on their media accounts.…

“15.5% of students nationally reported being bullied online”(“Association Between Anti-Bullying Laws in 25 States”). Anti-cyberbullying laws and anti-harassment policies are both vulnerable to constitutional challenge based on vagueness. They can also suffer from overbreadth because they forbid protected speech as well as unprotected speech. “While 43 states have anti-bullying statutes, only 21 prohibit cyberbullying”(Anti-Cyberbullying Legislation). And so because of their vagueness and overbreadth, it is likely that many anti-bullying statutes will suffer the same fate as most anti-harassment policies.…
