Synthesis Essay: Does Sports Build Character?

One time, when I was little, I went to my first New York Yankees baseball game. They were playing their biggest rival, the Boston Red Sox. Within the last inning, one of the Yankees’ pitchers hit one of the Red Sox batters and a brawl broke out. It was a 40 man team fight and no one could stop them. Today, I remember that game like it was yesterday. As I ask myself, does sports build character? I think of that fight. You hear about fights all the time between MLB, NBA, NFL, and other sports like hockey, UFC, and MMA they make violence seem acceptable. I think to myself and I know that character isn’t about violence, it isn’t about the “crap talk”, but it’s about if you knock a guy down you can pick them up with respect. She never hit a homerun in her life, but during her game against Central Washington she hit a three run homer over center field. As she was running to second she realized she had forgot to touch first and ended up tearing her ACL and could not move. Only she could touch each base for it to count as her only and last home run. Central Washington’s Mallory Holton, who led in home runs spoke up. She and a teammate picked up Sara and helped her touch each bag to have her home run even though it meant losing the game. The story touches my heart but also shows there’s people out there that have character but is it from sports? People look up to athletes of all sports and the way the athletes repay them is some people’s dream come true. Either way if the athletes actually mean it or because they feel obligated to do it, it still shows character. They have fame because of the sport but it is also why they have that …show more content…
Although, I have more rules here because of softball, I understand why. College is about freedom and learning what you wanna do for the rest of your life, but if you play sports you are to set an example and to learn to mature fast both on and off the field. I have not only felt the need to be more respectful towards people but I also learned not to follow the crowd and to be who you are. As a result, if you are disrespectful to anyone of the community, team, or facility of the school there will always be a punishment for your action. This not only teaches us manners but it teaches us character. Does sports build character? Yes, and my personal life defines that. One of my coaches for a team I have played for in the past once said, “If you aren’t willing to get in another fight with another team because your teammates fighting, then leave.” It’s not to promote violence but to show the respect, it may not be right but it shows we are one, the team is one, we are together, and we will have each other’s back with no

This was the most runs given up by a team in ALCS history (Wisnia 2014). The Red Sox were now just one game from elimination and it seemed like everyone had counted them out. I stared in at my catcher, Drew Wessel, beads of sweat fell off my forehead. It was the bottom of the sixth and we were one out away from winning the World Series, he flashed me a two which meant curveball. I checked the runner, got my grip on the ball, and checked the runner again. I lifted my leg and let go of the ball. We were the last game of the tournament, it was August 1st and the daylight was just starting to slip behind the Rocky Mountains in center field.…

Imagine a high school athlete, head spinning from tests and quizzes and homework grades, mind swimming with due dates and deadlines, trying not only to balance the hardships high school offers but also juggling his passion of football. Imagine after all his hard work, one of his grades slipped and now he is forced to cut his sport. Do students really deserve this kind of pressure? That is why the no pass, no play rule is a ridiculous rule to follow, since not only does this add extra stress to an average person's head, this rule also completely ignores the fact that students who have learning disabilities and use sports as an escape from their struggles are stripped away of their passion. Sports also has many benefits that not even school can…
