Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) is a common phenomenon resulting from the performance of un-accustomed exercise or with an increased intensity or duration (2) and is commonly associated with participation in invasion team sports. Several studies have shown that eccentric muscle actions lead to greater evidence of muscle damage. (Byren et al, 2004 – 2,11,13,18,24).
EIMD is mainly caused by strong eccentric muscle contraction during intense exercise however in multiple sprint sports such as Gaelic football, soccer rugby and AFL muscle is also often damaged by direct impact through players contact and collisions with each other.
It involves the mechanical disruption of the muscle fibers and release of cellular components such as Creatine Kinase (CK) into the blood. Other well documented symptoms of EIDM include disruption of intracellular muscle structure, prolonged impairment of muscle function (3,4,5,6), and delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS).

It can be described as a hybrid of soccer, rugby and basketball with very close similarities to Australian Rules Football (1). It is played on a grass rectangular surface with dimensions of 145m long and 90m wide. (can vary, find lowest and highest dimensions).
Each team has a goalkeeper, six defenders, two midfield players and six forwards. The ball used is slightly larger and heavier than that used in a soccer match and may be caught, and/or kicked from the ground or hands. Goalposts with crossbars are located on both end lines. A point is awarded when the ball is kicked or hand passed over the crossbar, and a goal, which is worth 3 points, is awarded when the ball is passes underneath the crossbar between the two goalposts ( 2).
The duration of a game is 60 minutes at Club and Minor County level and 70 minutes for Senior County
