Terrible as this may seem, the Red Menace was a representation of the international communist conspiracy, meaning that anyone could be a communist. For example, the most prominent aspect of the ad is a map of the US that is almost fully red and has the words “The Red Menace” written across it. In the 1950s, communists were symbolized by the color red and were referred to as Reds. Having a map of the US covered in red sets a fearful mood of what the future could look like. Targeting the adults and kids, this part of the ad is able to show what will happen if nothing is done to prevent communism from spreading. Another part of the ad shows a man with a shadow that does not correspond with him, to further warn people about communists. This part of the ad relates to a man named Joseph McCarthy, who accused many people of being communists. The fake shadow relates to the fact that anyone may be a communist or, a double agent. People even became ready to surrender their friends after seeing the deceptive nature of real communists in America.
