Abstract
A Streetcar Named Desire is a play written by American playwright Tennessee Williams in 1947. In his play, Williams shed the light on the differences between classes in that age, through certain symbols, such as colors and music. The colors chosen by the main characters, Blanche, Stanley, Stella and Mitch in their outfit reflect their backgrounds, in addition to its role in portraying their personalities. All at once and much, much too completely. It was like you, suddenly turned a blinding light on something that had always been half in shadow, that’s how it stuck the world for me” (Williams 182). In the past, her love to her husband makes her life lighten, after her husband’s suicide, this light had faded and started to destruct her. She loses love, therefore she loses light, so she tries to escape light in order to get away from reality. Blanche ignores reality through making sexual affairs with other men, and all her attempts to hide reality in front of Mitch, Stella and Staley is due to her fear from revealing her vulgar past. She thinks that if Mitch discovers her sexual affairs and her real age, then he will refuse marrying her, and this was shown obviously in scene nine “I don’t want realism. I want magic!” it was the first time, when Blanche confesses to Mitch that she doesn’t want reality but magic and illusion, which helps her hide her old …show more content…
