“A Doll House” by Henrik Ibsen surrounds the enigma of social struggle that people in the nineteenth century experienced. The action revolves around the marriage of Torvald and Nora how these two people that lack awareness of what they are and also views things differently. Nora is described as a woman who is struggling to achieve her own self and how she confront the submissive force by Torvald using lies and deception, and the life that Nora had symbolizes that she is trapped in the comfort provided by Torvald, she is given money to take care of the house as she is the doll in a doll house. The play was intended to symbolize that all of them lived in the dollhouse and the characters in the play is a doll that is controlled by an entity. In the play every characters wants to achieve to be the perfect someone in the area, for Nora she thrive to be the perfect housewife, for Krogstad he is under control of the society standards, how he is unable to climb the ladder leading to success. In the play Nora said “You know I could never think of going against you” (788). This illustrate that she intends to be the perfect wife that Torvald wants her to be, and also in many occasion she did succumb to Torvald’s power of authority as her husband. As a result they both are under the control of what society thinks as well, and Torvald image of his own power are also given by the society even though he think that he is free from all the prejudice he still are a slave of power that is created by the society. For instance what do you think if husband is abusing his power to hurt the wife? Or when a wife is more dominant on the relationship than the husband? It feels wrong. In contrast of that people can’t be free from what people think and money also are one of the things that create dominance over them. Money is a creations of mankind greed it creates the power over others; in the story Torvald is using money to controlled his wife actions. Their ability to control …show more content…
We need to know our limits and stop lying to our self, for me I agree that sometimes lying could result in better results, while this may be true we need to stop pretending to be someone we are not. I had some experience in this matter when I had to be someone I don’t like to fit in to the society, but in the end it tortured me for years. Likewise I’ve seen my friends who tried so hard to fit in into the society and it changed his personality, he rarely see me, his best friend, and he also live a lifestyle that he didn’t liked. Regarding the play “A Doll’s House” by Henrik Ibsen is an interesting piece, although I have some complications towards it. The play itself revolves around Torvald and Nora but I think that the title does not represent the story quite correctly, the play creates the image of everyone are being controlled by something but the title seems only directed towards Nora and how she in the end made the decision to understand more about herself. Ibsen approach to motifs is really interesting, he used concealment to show what I really happening in the play, he used lies subtly to describe what marriage that Nora and Torvald had. In the end it is our choices to break the chain that binds us, like Nora, or live with the standards that the society made for us. Above all we all still need to understand our own self and by doing that we will know what
