In The Cog, Charles E. Fritch uses symbolism and metaphors to express the main character's feelings and personality. Symbolism is heavy in the story. There are loads of good examples of it to find. There are also other types of author’s craft as well. One example of another well used one are similes. Metaphors are also very important in the story. They really keep it together. The main character is really important and that is shown well in this story because of its great usage of author’s craft. Throughout the story, Fritch says things like President and Cogs to show different meanings for normal things. In this story they are examples of symbolism. Similes don’t add as much of an explanation as symbolism and metaphors do. Symbolism really adds feelings. One simile in the story is “ Their voices buzzed with excitement like thousands of bees.” It is a good simile but it only adds a bit of effect. Similes can add a good effect but really aren’t as powerful as symbolism and metaphors in “The Cog”. Metaphors are very strongly used in “The Cog” as well. One example of a metaphor is “ Even the astronauts were cogs - all cogs in the machine.” It compares the astronauts to cogs in a machine. That machine was the president spaceship that the astronauts were about to fly in. Fritch put that line in the story to really show how the main character felt at that moment.
