Similes don’t add as much of an explanation as symbolism and metaphors do. Symbolism really adds feelings. One simile in the story is “ Their voices buzzed with excitement like thousands of bees.” It is a good simile but it only adds a bit of effect. Similes can add a good effect but really aren’t as powerful as symbolism and metaphors in “The Cog”. Metaphors are very strongly used in “The Cog” as well. One example of a metaphor is “ Even the astronauts were cogs - all cogs in the machine.” It compares the astronauts to cogs in a machine. That machine was the president spaceship that the astronauts were about to fly in. Fritch put that line in the story to really show how the main character felt at that moment. Like symbolism, metaphors show feelings strongly and it builds on to the story very well. Symbolism and metaphors were used very strongly in “The Cog”. the symbolism created a really strong feeling. It helped to explain the main character very well. Even though some people think similes were more important in the story, they really didn’t show the feelings of the characters like symbolism did. However, similes did help make really good effects. The metaphors helped add on to the symbolism to describe the main character as well. The way the author used metaphors makes them go perfectly with the symbolism of the story. Author's craft creates strong feelings and effects and Charles E. Fritch
