2. What is the common and scientific (genus and species) name of your specimen? There will be resources in the lab to help you identify the correct scientific name for each organism. What taxonomic family does your specimen belong to?
The common name of the specimen is a sword fern, also known as the Christmas fern, or the sword holly fern. The scientific name of the species is Polystichum munitum. The taxonomic family …show more content…

3. Give a brief but thorough description of where the specimen was located and what it was doing (if an animal) when you found it. Was it interacting with other organisms? Describe these interactions.
The specimen was located with other American crows on an overhead power line, seen while on Tualatin Valley Highway that connects Beaverton and Hillsboro, Oregon. The birds appeared to be extremely alert, glancing around every so often, as if waiting for prey to appear. Once one bird flew away, the rest followed in an organized manner.
4. What features of this specimen demonstrate adaptations to the environment in which it was found? This question requires a bit of thought on your part. A detailed explanation will be required to receive full credit.
The features of this specimen that demonstrates adaptations to the environment in which it was found are their wings. With their flight, they are able to travel to areas where land-dwelling predators cannot attack them. Furthermore, their feathers aid them in flight, and can also keep them warm in Oregon’s cold winter
