1.1 What is sustainability and sustainable construction?
Sustainability is living with our means, learning to live comfortably within the earth's natural environmental limits without having to sacrifice our wealth and happiness. Also it can define as the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Population growth and/or growth in the rates of consumption of resources cannot be sustained. Because of this issue sustainable construction is verified by world to make the future better for people. Sustainable construction's aims to meet present day needs for housing, working environments and infrastructure without compromising the ability of future generations …show more content…
We will talk more about this area in following assignment.
1.3 What is Reduce, Rethink, Refuse & Recycle?
• Refuse is to say no to things people offer you that you don’t need, that you never even asked for. •Reduce, to use less. Think about what you use and buy. •Reuse something you already have instead of buying something. •Recycle is needing a single use item, with something you can use over and over again
Using this method for construction is highly effective and efficient. it will minimize the wastage and maximize the output. This project contains how to use this method in our construction.
1.4 What is pre-fabricated materials?
Prefabrication means manufacture standardized parts or sections ready for quick assembly and erection as building.
These materials are used for quick constructions, so it will take less time to construct and there will be a good quality in constructed …show more content…
Reinforcement layer will be placed on lean concrete.(cover blocks which will not allow to contact reinforcement contact with mud and water) .Then concrete will be poured in the footing. In between column footings, rubble foundation will be constructed. after that DPC (damp proof course/20mm ) will be added on the footing.(which will keep moisture out from the walls). To fit the H iron, a base plate should be added with anchor bolts to join them.
Figure 3.2 3.3 DPC and foundation
There are many alternative methods to build this foundation. We can use raft foundation methods on a slope. Figure 3.4 Figure 3.5 Raft foundation Cut and fill
Below mentioned the difference between stepped footing and the alternative methods.
Foundation type Advantages Disadvantages
Stepped footing foundation •Costly effective.
•Durable.
•most suitable for residences. •Depends on the soil
Raft foundation •Durable. •High Cost
•Mostly appropriate for big constructions.
Cut and fill foundation •Suitable for residences.
•Easy to build the foundation •High cost because of maintaining the level
•Most probably retaining walls will be needed.
Therefore best way to construct the foundation of this structure is using stepped
