Susie Taylor was one of the lucky slaves during the time of the civil war. Not only did she learn how to read and write, but she also earned her freedom in 1862 by joining the civil war (Taylor). Susie Taylor wasn’t the only African American slave to join the war. Over 179,000 blacks would end of volunteering to fight in the war or take any other job that would be available because it would guarantee their freedom, and being free is the main key point to a slaves happiness. Jobs like cooking for the soldiers would come into play, where many slaves didn’t even know how to cook. If it meant being free in the long run, slaves didn’t care about the cost, they would do whatever it was. Take any opportunity that would come their way (“Women in the civil war, The role of women in the civil war”). War is never a good thing but the civil war did save many African American slaves and lead to many of them taking a lead toward showing great gratitude toward it, which would take them a long way, and lead to a better life in the long run. Many African Americans were pleased and shocked by the fact that they actually could have a shot of being free in a country like America. That they can actually have the same rights of white men that were superior over them in the war. This is what really took stand in the American Civil War. War was one of the few things that made an African American slave feel like their lives are not just there. What they're doing is actually going to make a big difference to the country.
