One of my students wrote an expository essay where he explained why his grandmother is special to him. He stated that she was special because she supervises him and his sister. He specified that supervision means that she takes care of them and makes sure they have what they need. After reading his essay and participating in class discussions, I concluded that it is in the act of supervising that people should be empowered. I intend to be a supervisor who is always taking care of and empowering others.

In addition to fostering relationships through trust, great leaders include purposeful planning to generate school wide improvement and success. This is where it is vital for administrators to be present. Being present in the classrooms, hallways, meetings, professional learning sessions and community gatherings will communicate that leaders are part of this growing and developing team. More specifically, when administrators are present they are able to gather insightful information to plan for instructional improvement, among other areas, for growth. I will work diligently to be present in order to empower educators to grow and develop. This involves using my power to ensure that teachers have the necessary resources to achieve professional growth. It is naïve to think that any principal alone can take care of every individual in the building all the time. Therefore, just like my student’s grandmother assists him in becoming independent yet providing the necessary provisions, I too, will empower teachers so that they can turn around and do the same with their students. How do great principals inspire enthusiasm? They do this by caring for teachers and growing people. The practice of “caring” for others cultivates a culture of “we.” Great principals are constantly asking, “What can we do?” and “How can we improve?” Promoting care and a culture where “we are all in it together” speaks volumes and encourages long lasting and developing teachers.
