Diversity is one of the key reasons why the UK has a myriad of solutions for the problems faced by migrants in the country. Policymakers responded with various methods of how to manage diversity which came to be known as multiculturalism (Vertovec, 2007). The ‘Race relations act 1965’ was taken out to promote equality among different ethnic individuals to live in harmony, especially migrant. Discrimination was one of the key problems faced by migrants, and other ethnic minority people, this act was taken out to avoid such discrimination and to make individuals feel more part of the wider society. There is a “Life in the United Kingdom Test” which individuals’ take whom seek a definite stay in the UK and want British citizenship. Individuals have to study and gain knowledge about the UK, in order to pass the test (News.bbc.co.uk, 2016). By doing so they learn new things such as the history of the UK which they might not have been aware of, and this can help them to become more ‘British’. This test can be criticised as individuals who are born in the UK would struggle to pass the test, so why would migrants need this specific knowledge if it’s unnecessary. Parents find it ‘normal’ to send their children to a school where they would find their own kind. This separates them from other ethnic background individuals and racially isolates them. The curriculum in ethnic minority schools is most likely to be lower in quality, and the course offerings such as college preparation may vary. These schools also find it harder to attract teachers to have high quality teaching, these teachers are a close link to a student’s good achievement. Ethnic minorities are seen to be treated worse than white children, for example African American children are seen to be a bad influence on other children, and they do not focus on work and always avoid behaving.
