A suntan is the result of the body’s defense mechanism against harmful ultra violet light emitted by the sun. All bands of UV radiation damage collagen fibers and accelerate aging of the skin. Both UVA and UVB destroy vitamin A in skin, which may cause further damage. UVB light can cause direct DNA damage. In defense, our body releases a pigment called melanin, which is produced by cells in our skin called melanocytes. Melanin absorbs ultraviolet light and dissipates it as heat. According to Gary Chuang, assistant professor of dermatology at Tufts University School of Medicine says,” Melanin is a natural sunscreen. When your body senses sun damage, what it does is it starts sending out melanin into surrounding cells and …show more content…
This range light waves is what humans can see, (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet). No matter the electromagnetic wave type, all waves travel at the same speed which is 3.0E8 m/s in a vacuum. Space also isn’t a perfect vacuum. It is composed of low-density particles, EM waves, neutrinos, and magnetic field. Because space is so close to being a perfect vacuum, we round the speed of light to 3.0E8 m/s. On average the earth is roughly 150,000,000,000 miles away, but it only takes approximately 8 minutes for the radiation from the sun to reach the earth. The sun also produces electromagnetic waves that we can't see. High energy gamma rays are produced through fusion in the core of the sun, but are continuously absorbed by solar plasma and converted to lower frequency waves. In fact, most of these gamma rays are reduced to frequencies scene in the UV and IR spectrum. As electromagnetic radiation reaches the earth, most is absorbed by the atmosphere (in the ozone layer and re-emitted as heat). Some of this heat is reflected back into outer space while some hits the surface of the earth. Along with this heat is also radiation from the sun. As this radiation hits the ground, it causes sunburns to those who aren’t
