Summary: Warner's Broken Dome Cave

Improved Essays
A memorial filled publication, volume 62 of the Cleve-O-Grotto news contains an ode to caving by Stephanie Lyons, as well as tributes to both Warner’s Broken Dome Cave, and John Ludwigson. In respect to Warner’s Broken Dome Cave, Dean Wilder recounted a late 1960’s trip to cave, the narrative of which is accompanied by a series of nice images. These images are believed to be the only remaining pictures of the cave still in existence, as the entrance of the cave was unfortunately bulldozed closed by property owners in 1992. The destruction of such pristine caving environments should serve as a reminder to cavers everywhere the importance of both respecting landowner’s wishes, and preserving positive landowner relations. The tribute to John Ludwigson

Carved into the sides of cliffs in Mesa Verde National Park are what has come to be known as Cliff Dwellings. However, a more appropriate name would be cliff houses in a cliff village. The rooms range from small storage areas to entire communities of intertwined living spaces sometimes carved into the sides of cliffs. The Cliff Dwellings are believed to have been built by the Ancestral Puebloans (“Cliff Dwellings”), aka Anasazi and Pueblo Indians. This shift in the name of these people represents a changing discourse, one that used to view Native Americans as savages, but now recognizes these Native Americans as a collection of hundreds of separate communities with distinct languages and cultures.…

The building is octagonal and has exceptionally detailed outlines around the whole outside. The building appears to have an attention on symmetry and repetition. The shading plans and outlines are rehashed around the entire building. The outlines and shapes are fundamentally blue, green, and yellow.…

Jessica Martinkosky V100 Weyers Cave, VA 24486 Dear Ms. Martinkosky, I am writing to introduce you to the work of Marilyn Levine. She is a ceramics artist that specializes in making clay appear as leather. Unfortunately she is deceased however; she has dedicated her career to making hyper realistic renderings of leather objects that are entirely made from clay. Although many artists refine, vary or shift styles throughout their careers, Levine stuck to the realistic sculpture she devised 35 years ago as a graduate student at UC Berkeley. A viewer of one of her shows described her as the following "In a lesser artist, this apparent lack of development would be interpreted as a severe limitation.…

They come into this world knowing and understanding very little and spend the rest of their lives trying to figure out everything (11).” This statement from How Do We Know? provides insight to the knowledge that many children and adults are grasping to understand. Children need adults to give advice and provide them the ability to grow up and be successful adults. Questions lead to answers which in return can turn into knowledge.…

Efforts to preserve rock art in neighboring Faris Cave site have shown promising results in the use of ethyl silicate and silane that may enable the lengthening of time for archaeological research, and maintain a link to the past (Grisafe 1996, 373). Next is the historical, and modern, vandalism of sites within Kansas. From the movement of “pioneers” and settlers of into the area leaving their marks on the stones, to modern inhabitants marking up, etching out, using the works as target practice, the works themselves are now harder to observe, if left at…

A few weeks after my trip to summer camp, my family took a trip to the antelope slot canyons in Page. Our tour guide, a Navaho, named Jim, gave us a great time riding on the back of a pickup truck through the desert and describing the significance of certain rock formations, but the truly magnificent part of the journey was learning little fragments of his life. Jim was born and raised on the Navajo reservation. He was eight years old when his friend discovered the slot canyons, and they played in them daily. On our trip, his melancholy expression bore a sadness for what was gone; thousands of tourists trampled the canyons daily.…

Attending the geology camp GeoFORCE for the past four years, I have learned a quite a few things about erosion, archeology, and the affects of the erosion in the future. Erosion is a scary subject to talk about and the fact that the North Slope’s erosion is one of the fastest rates of erosion in the nation scares me to death. However, the erosion revealed some fascinating human remains. With my little knowledge of archeology and geology, the law of uniformitarianism, which means the present is the key to the past, comes to play. The remains that were found can unveil some things we did not know about the past.…

Throughout the history of activism within the LGBT+ community, there has been a common goal to promote openness and acceptance. By employing a strategy modeled after the civil rights movement, which mainly focused on assimilation into the dominant institutions as a means of acceptance, activist groups have received their fair share of criticism. In 1997, Cathy J Cohen, a Black lesbian author and social activist, published the groundbreaking article “Punks, Bulldaggers, and Welfare Queens: The Radical Potential of Queer Politics?” a year after a controversy she introduces in the beginning of the essay. The famed Gay Men’s Health Crisis, best known for their active role in the treatment of HIV/AIDS during the AIDS crisis, came under fire after…

The Allegory of the Cave is a hypothesis put into perspective by Plato, regarding human awareness. In the short story a group of prisoners have been confined in a cavern ever since birth with no knowledge of the outside world. They are chained facing a wall unable to turn their heads. While a fire behind them gives off a faint light. Sometimes people pass by carrying figures of animals and other objects that cast shadows on the wall.…
