Superior Essays
Mental health has become a serious issue amongst college students in the United States. According to the National Alliance on Mental Health Illness (2015), the third leading cause of death on college campuses is suicide. 73 percent of college students who are currently living with a mental health condition have experienced a mental health crisis on campus. However, 34.2 percent reported that they were not aware that their students were dealing with these issues on their campus. In the past year, over 11 percent of college students have been diagnosed or treated for anxiety, and more than 10 percent of students reported that they were either diagnosed or treated for depression (National Alliance on Mental Health Illness, 2015).

While this topic is mildly addressed in the previous point, I feel as though this is an important topic that deserves recognition in its own paragraph. Unintentionally, by always being on the run and constantly cramming for that spectacular test score, an excessive number of students are beginning to have psychological impediments. Some of the more commonly brought up concerns that I personally observe is crippling anxiety and in fewer cases, depression. Due to social media, it is widely known that college students are one of the most likely groups of people to get diagnosed with a mental health condition. The main issue that faces students with a mental health condition is the stigma attached, often they will be too afraid to get diagnosed.…

After gathering research from other sources, besides the University of Mississippi Counseling Center, I discovered just how prevalent mental illness is on college campuses. It is estimated that one and four percent of Americans 18 years and older are living with a diagnosable mental health disorder. This is a huge problem for college aged individuals, because unlike older adults, the age group that college students fall into are shown as the lowest rated group for seeking help, with an estaminet of 40 percent of students. The most common mental illnesses among college students are depression, suicide, eating disorders, and addiction. These illnesses often correlate with lower GPA and higher rates of dropping out of college.…

The stigma of seeking a mental health treatment is the reason why most individuals with a diagnosable mental disorder do not seek formal treatment in any of the many health/mental health care delivery systems. Therefore, individuals with a diagnosable mental disorder have tough time accepting the needs of formal treatments because of the embarrassment and fear of being discriminated. In this situation, I believe these individuals are more concerned about the long-term care and what others might think personally due to self-esteem issue. In the article, Stigma and Help Seeking for Mental Health Among College Students, few of the Psychologists discuss their studies by examining people’s own stigmatizing attitudes and how they found that higher…

College students are dealing with mental health issues at some of the highest rates in decades, according to a growing body of research about young adults’ emotional wellbeing, and colleges and universities are not necessarily equipped to assist students’ mental health issues. In 2013, a study conducted by the American College Health Association, found that more than half of college students have experienced “overwhelming anxiety” sometime over the past year. More than thirty percent of students said they have felt so depressed “that it was difficult to function.” Nearly forty percent of students said they “felt things were hopeless.” This uptick in mental health issues among college students has been developing for years, but colleges and universities, and their counseling programs are not always prepared to help students (National College Health Assessment, 2013).…

Before we describe the position we are hiring for, we believe it important to describe the need for such a role. While universities, and their residences, have been around for hundreds of years, there has been an increased demand for residence life professionals and programs. When looking at the statistics behind student well-being and university housing, it has been widely acknowledged that there is a high number of students dropping out of post secondary education, experiencing a greater risk of depression, and unfortunately a high rate of suicide. And while Universities have hired mental health and medical professionals, there is still a lack of significant progress towards the aforementioned issues. Residence life and student housing is an emerging field within academia that has risen to the challenges of student dropout rates, mental health issues, and in particular suicide rates.…
