The BLM wants to broaden the countries understanding of the state of violence and all the ways in which Black people are intentionally left powerless at the hand of the state. The way the try to influence the rest of the country using art is through protests. In those protests they use words and signs to convey their message. One of the most popular phrases that was uttered throughout this movement was the “Hands up, don’t shoot.” In 2014 an 18-year-old black man was shot to death by a white police officer. The “Hands up, don’t shoot” saying came from eye witness accounts that say Michael Brown the man that was shot hand his hands raised and was mouthing the words “Don’t Shoot” This was a very powerful message that range out all across the country and was used in many protests. Even though the story has been widely proven false, it is still a rally cry for the BLM movement. Another saying that is often heard at these protests are the words of Eric Garner. In 2014, Garner was held in a chokehold on Staten Island by the NYPD. Garner is said to have yelled 11 times that he couldn’t breathe. “I can’t Breathe” was the other rally cry the crowds of black supports exclaimed all across the country. It influenced black culture and stated a revolution of music in this country and around the world. This social movement influenced a lot of African Americans to pick up instruments and play music. It also led the African Americans to believe in their own culture that was widely looked at as bad or negative from the outside. This was a new type of music for most. The use of different sounds and vocalizing in different forms that weren’t always just words was something that people even outside of the community felt was interesting. This music influences most of today’s music in ways such as pop, rock and R&B. Some of the genres are even mixing in movies such as the Great Gatsby, where they use the combination of pop, rap and jazz all to modernize a 2013 movie set in the roaring 20s. Jazz is a music that influenced not only music it self but the world around it and everyone that listened and danced to
