Summary Of Why Abortion Is Immoral By Don Marquis

Don Marquis’ main thesis in the article Why Abortion is Immoral, explores what makes the act of killing people wrong, which has a direct implication on abortion. Marquis attempts to validate that abortion is the same as the killing of an adult human being, expect in extraordinary circumstances. Just before laying the basis of his argument, Marquis briefly describes the debate over the morality of abortion. He begins the article by observing that the debate of abortion has already reached a standstill. Where the anti-abortionists demonstrate that the fetuses typically display many of the same features as of adult humans. Pro-choicers convincingly contend that embryos do not have the sorts of components that are for the most part taken to be fundamental …show more content…
The problem that Marquis suggests, is that the views on the which anti-abortionists rely are too broad, where as the opposing groups views’ are too narrow. In light of all of this, Marquis recommends adopting a new strategy. He plans to first recognize what clarifies why murdering a grown-up human is conventionally wrong, and after that to check whether that reason can be connected to premature birth. On the off chance that it would, we be able to will have found a solid reason that premature birth is possibly indecent. What isn't right with murdering, Marquis, contends, is that it denies the casualty of something important. Specifically, it denies the casualty of everything that she would have esteemed later on had her life not been rashly finished. Among these things will be different objectives, accomplishments, finished undertakings, connections, tasteful encounters, etc. Executing isn't right since it takes away the estimation of those, and numerous other, encounters. Marquis contends that there are a few attractions to clarifying the misleading quality of murdering along these lines. In any case, it can represent

Are the vast majority of abortions immoral? In “ Why Abortion is Immoral”, Don Marquis argues that they are immoral because the typical fetus has a future like ours so to kill it is to deprive it of a future of value. Marquis’ argument rests on the assumption that the morality of abortion depends on the moral status of the typical fetus and whether killing it is morally wrong. In “A Defense of Abortion”, Judith Jarvis Thomson challenges this assumption by using several analogies to show that under some circumstances, the moral status of the typical fetus does not outweigh a woman’s right to her body. She says that those who assume that a fetus is a human person with high moral status base their argument on that the fetus has a right to life…

In the essay “Why Abortion is Immoral,” philosopher Don Marquis uses utilitarian principles to argue that “abortion is, except in rare cases, seriously immoral… [and] in the same category as killing an innocent human being” (223). However, he deliberately avoids relating his thesis to abortion in the specific contexts of rape, maternal death, and severe postpartum health complications. Thus, in my analysis of his claim, I plan on adopting Marquis’ utilitarian perspective to evaluate the permissibility of abortion in regard to these delicate scenarios. I will begin my paper by giving a brief summary of “Why Abortion is Immoral.”…

Marquis argues that killing a fetus deprives it of a valuable future/future like ours, and concludes by saying abortion is not morally permissible. I agree with Marquis’ argument that it is wrong to kill a fetus through abortion because I believe that they have a valuable future as all humans do. While I agree with Marquis that majority of deliberate abortions are seriously immoral, I do believe that in some cases it is permissible. For instance, choosing to have an abortion after being sexually assaulted or due to life threatening circumstances would be acceptable reasons for having an abortion. Being that the loss of one’s life is one of the greatest losses that can occur, I strongly concur with Marquis’s argument.…

Don Marquis argues in his article An Argument that Abortion is Wrong that abortion, except in specific rare instances is seriously wrong. He bases this claim off of the principle that killing any innocent human being is wrong. While the central point of most pro-choice individuals is that women should have the right to control their body, Marquis argues that the right of the unborn fetus outweighs the right for a woman to control her body. Before supporting his thesis Marquis lays out one of the main problems in the abortion debate. People in favor of abortion often have a very narrow view on what constitutes a person and this is problematic because it leaves out infants, severely retarded and mentally ill individuals.…

Abortion is wrong, but no one should be judged for the actions and/or decisions they make. Every human being that breathes, walks, and thinks, can decide what to do with their body. In this paper I agree with Don Marquis’s view of abortion. Abortion is wrong because it deprives the fetus from its future. In other words, abortion is wrong because killing a future child stops it from growing and making a difference to their lives.…

This asserts that the wrongness of killing drives from the unproblematic assumption that killing you or me is prima facie wrong. Furthermore, the reason killing you or me is wrong is because, as victims of death, we would assume the greatest possible loss of any conceivable crime. That is the loss of our future; our future holds every activity, project, experience, and enjoyment that we will ever have. Marquis continues that the…

Disregarding the mother’s perspective can be compared to getting an arm amputated and declaring the action is immoral from the arms point of view. Abortion differs in each case and no situation is the same, to equate a case to another is immoral and unfair to the parties involved. Marquis writes “Since we do believe that it is wrong to kill defenseless little babies, it is important that a theory of the wrongness of killing easily account for this” although he is using emotional blackmail, it does not stray me from pointing out that embryos are not babies and due to the account of miscarriages and health issues it is not determined they will have a future. Pregnancy is a dangerous time for the mother and fetus and most miscarriages happen between 7 and 12 weeks. Killing is the worst of crimes except in the cases of self-defense.…

As human beings, there are certain things we value in life. When a human being dies, they no longer have the ability to have all of the pleasurable experiences that they would take part in in the future. “When one is killed, they are deprived both of what they now value which would have been part of my future personal life. Therefore, the loss of one’s life is one of the greatest losses one can suffer” (Marquis, 1989). Through this reasoning, I came to the conclusion that killing an innocent adult human being…

In today’s societies around the world, there is currently two factions of the highly controversial topic of abortion and whether it should be allowed or outlawed. These two factions on opposite sides are pro-choice and pro-life. Pro-choice supporters in essence believes a woman has the right to an abortion if she decides to do so. On the other hand, pro-life supporters believe the fetus is its own human being and has the right to live, thus an abortion cannot be performed on the woman. Judith Jarvis Thomson, a philosophy professor supports the right to an abortion in her paper, “A defense of Abortion” (186).…

So the fetus has a right to life. No doubt the mother has a right to decide what shall happen in and to her body; everyone would grant that. But surely a person’s right to life is stronger and more stringent than the mother’s right to decide what happens in and to her body, and so outweighs it. So the fetus may not be killed; an abortion may not be performed.” The remainder of her paper is a series of analogies meant to challenge the basic argument mention above.…

The two approaches bifurcate due to one critical assumption; who exactly has a right to life? I will explore what it means to have a “right to life”, and use my findings to evaluate both Marquis’ arguments in his essay, “Why Abortion Is Immoral” and Warren’s arguments in her essay, “On the Moral and Legal Status of Abortion”. I will consider some potentially conflicting extensional results on both moral theories, and critique the authors’ responses to each. It must be clarified that abortion, in the ethical sense, refers to “normal” abortion, that is, free of contexts such as…

The most intricate writers on the subject of abortion all believe that whether or not abortion is morally permissible stands or falls on whether or not a fetus is the sort of being whose life it is seriously wrong to end. The purpose of this paper isn’t to address the greater ethics of abortion such as abortion before implantation or abortion when the life of a woman is threatened by a pregnancy; rather I seek to address the general argument for the claim that the overwhelming majority of deliberate abortions are seriously immoral. I which to investigate further Don Marquis claim that I something is living its wrong to kill it. If this were true people that are dying from disease would believe that they loss a future and all the experiences that they would have had. The second one is that killing alone is wrong because it automatically takes away the greatest loss, which is their life.…

In his essay, “Why Abortion Is Immoral”, he argues that abortion is taking away any future a fetus will have no matter good or bad. In this essay, he also explains how abortion has a greater effect on the fetus because it is the one who is dying. All aspects of that fetus’ future have been taken from him or her. In the quote below, Marquis further explains how the killing of the fetus affects the fetus more so than those who are around the…
