Background Information Interview

I observed in an elementary school, which is one of the smallest schools in the Placentia Yorba Linda Unified School District. I observed a first grade class that consists of 30 students. This particular school site consists of 16 general education teachers, 2 Special Day Class Teachers, 1 RSP teacher, 2 RTI teachers, a Speech-Language Pathologist, School Psychologist, a Physical Therapist, an Occupational Therapist, a Health Clerk, as well are various amounts of support staff which included administrative staff, aides, janitorial staff as well as a food service worker and 463 students ranging from Pre-school up to 5th grade. Their website is very thorough and had this as their Mission Statement:
• “We believe

We expect academic achievement, personal responsibility, honesty, cultural sensitivity, and respect for all people, property, and environment.
• We believe in providing an exciting, challenging curriculum responsive to individual interests, needs and learning styles.
• We believe in providing a challenging, nurturing, and active learning environment for all children that ensures educational success, a life-long desire to learn, and personal and civic responsibility.”
I was able to visit this site on the very first day of school so I did not have to ask about the school rules as the teacher, began the day by going into all that was expected of the students’. She had them all come sit on the carpet in front of a big chair she sat on. She had a yellow poster with the school rules on it. The rules consisted of:
1. Be kind!
2. Be respectful!
3. Be responsible!
4. Be

If you have to go to the bathroom raise your hand with your first two fingers crossed and she will nod at you if you can go.
5. Pencils are only sharpened once a week and she will dismiss the tables to do so.
6. Numbers have been assigned to each set of 6 desks that make up tables, these table numbers will be used for dismissal before recess and lunch.
7. Ask permission before getting a drink of water or washing hands.
8. Do not get up and move around the classroom while the teacher is teaching.
9. After recess and lunch, everyone comes in and puts their heads down on their desks.
The teacher makes it clear that having respect for one another is her main concern. She has a special lesson set up where she covers what respect means to the environment, others, and to ourselves with pictures and words so the students can get the full meaning of what the word respect means to each entity.
The teacher then explained the various jobs in the classroom. Each table got a new table captain every week. The table captain’s are responsible for handing out worksheets and collecting works from each student, making sure all names are on papers and putting them in a basket for finished work. They are also responsible for getting the reading books after

Colleagues, Gene Autry (and Aerosmith, for what it’s worth) famously sang, “I’m back in the saddle again.” Today, the Arizona Legislature got back in its saddle as the 53rd Legislature, First Regular Session gaveled in for the first time today at noon. The day’s activities had that “first day of school” feeling and was largely pomp and circumstance. Members were officially sworn-in, speeches were made, and family and friends were introduced.…

Lacy Elementary School is in the process of implementing Positive Behavior Support Systems, but has seen a large influx of bullying in the cafeteria during lunch hours. Bullying involves any type of psychological or physical abuse and includes such behaviors as teasing or taunting (Whitted & Duper, 2005). Bullying can also be defined as the use of hostile actions that is meant to be disparaging to the individual (Long & Alexander, 2010). While studying the definitions of bullying and reading observations of Lacy Elementary School, bullying became prevalent during lunch hours, which involves large numbers of students gathering in a common area. The implementation of an intervention team, as well as creation of an action plan will combat the issue of bullying in the cafeteria.…

The main focus of APS 8 is to create and maintain an environment in which the students feel safe and are encouraged and supported to learn. The classroom environment should demonstrate this atmosphere both physically and affectively. The classroom diagram used as the artifact directly relates to APS 8 by supporting cooperative learning, exemplifying a safe and well managed physical environment, and displaying an environment that makes every student feel important. First, the diagram demonstrates that the classroom is student-centered since the desks are arranged in groups of four students as opposed to straight rows.…

Bright Water School Lock-In Many of the students who attend the school dances we hold are overjoyed to hear that it 's possible there will be more dances held this year, and we entertained the idea of having seasonal dances. When I brought this idea up to my teacher, I was informed that the dances are, to my dismay, quite hard to put together. When Miss Kerr heard that the idea of dances and socializing with other class was important to the students, she presented the idea of a "Lock-in. "…

To me the lunch room was an example of semi-organized chaos. To those that know what is going on it is a well-oiled machine. It took me a days to figure out what was going on, but I finally got it. First things first, the students come in through the front doors of the cafeteria, the ones that brought their lunch box go and find a set at their designated table. The students that will be eating cafeteria food stay in a line with the teacher in the front.…

In all of my time of attending Homedale Middle School, I have witnessed many groups of students more increasingly each year. I supposed that each year I become more aware and observant of the life around me--specifically, others’ lives. Some cliques I see only outside, playing football or staying far out into the fields. But others I see every day, chatting in class, eating together at lunch, or even rough-housing in the hallways between periods, which causes chaos for everyone else and blocks our path to class. Even though this is the case, it is easier to identify certain types of groups at lunch.…

This is typically scheduled for Late February or Early March. The administration discusses the freshman handbook and guidance counselors provide information about scheduling for classes. The department liaisons briefly discuss academic expectations and/or course offerings in their respective departments for freshman students.…

When trying to figure out if a student will achieve academic success in a classroom the way a class is visually set up is overlooked and the main focus is on the amount of material the teacher will be teaching. A teacher is given a set of standards that is meant to help its students for the next class that they will eventually move on to but the way the standards are taught are up to the teacher. Most students retain the necessary material with the way the teacher engages them, relates the concept to common situations and uses the room provided. Our room LB 307 differs from my 10th grade English classroom in the way it affects the student’s success. The first thing I noticed when walking into LB 307 was the way the desks were set up, they are put together to form a circle and there are about five chairs to each group.…
