Book Report: A Peacock in the Land of Penguins

INTRO- summary of the book: A Peacock in the Land of Penguins is a metaphoric book about diversity relating to average business companies written about Perry the Peacock whom does not fit in at his work place. Perry the peacock and some other diverse individuals like Edward the Eagle got recruited to a company of only penguins. The penguins all have no varied differences in appearances or actions. Although Perry and the other outsiders have good ideas they make the typical penguin feel uncomfortable because of their looks and behaviors. Some outsiders tried to conform to the penguin standard like by wearing a penguin suit but not Perry the peacock. The penguins told Perry his feathers where to

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. I think this would be very beneficial to a lot of business’s that are less diverse or struggling to add more diversity. It would also be beneficial to just your average person as well because it gives you a whole new perspective on work places in general. It is also an easy read and is explained in a very simple way that I think almost anyone could understand. The metaphor keeps your attention and makes it interesting while also getting its point across. It did seem somewhat on the childish side but I personally enjoyed it. In a way this book makes your average company look really bad for making people dress a certain way and only hiring people who act a certain way but I don’t agree with some of their points. The reason companies want people to dress a certain way is because it is professional and they want to look sophisticated to their consumers. The purpose is not to make people feel out of place like it is made seem in this story. I agree that people of all different personalities should be hired and not have to change because they have a weird laugh like Perry the peacock or act different. I only would understand that in a situation of Human resource management because you want people who are good at communicating and are likeable to everyone. A normal person should never be discriminated against by color though. It would make no sense to discriminate against a colored

This essay is going to be about two articles called “The Amazing Penguin Rescue” (Lauren Tarshis) and “Saving Penguins, One Sweater At A Time” (Kristin Lewis). Did you know that little penguins are a species of penguin, so named because they can range anywhere from 10 to 12 inches tall (Kristin Lewis). When oil gets on penguins their feathers clump up, when this happens it exposes their skin and allows all the cold water and poisonous oil to get to their skin and make them cold (Lauren Tarshis 16). The penguins from “ The Amazing Penguin Rescue” and “ Saving Penguins, One Sweater At A Time” should be brought to a zoo close to home because it can prevent them from dying from poisonous oil spill when searching for food.…

In contrast, in “The seabird chronicle” the people make little sweat shirts for the little penguins to keep oil off of them when they dive into the oily water and to keep them warm this setting creates a mood of love. An example is, “The sweatshirts did the trick, warming the penguins and keeping them from preening. This bought workers time to carefully clean the oil from each bird. Over time the birds grew strong and healthy. Eventually, the penguins were well enough to return to the wild”(Lewis 19).…

Thomas & Ely (1996) espoused that a diverse workforce did not result in the improvement in the performance of the organization. Milliken and Martins (1996), concluded after reviewing the literature that racial and gender diversity can have adverse effect on individual and group outcomes in certain instances. Minority members of the group feel marginalized and suffer lower levels of psychological commitment and higher levels of absenteeism and turnover intent. Watson et al. (1993), postulates that in the course of time these adverse effects may diminish and will be supplanted by better quality and more creative…

Penguins live typically in the southern hemisphere or Antarctica. Penguins have a thick layer of insulating feathers that keeps them warm in the freezing temperatures. Not only do they need to be protected by the harsh temperatures, but also water. Penguins are superbly adapted to aquatic life, meaning that penguins were raised to swim in the waters. But the waters of the arctic are not all fun and games for the penguin.…

Penguins spend several hours a day preening or caring for their feathers. If penguins don’t keep them well maintained, their feathers would not stay waterproof. For extra protection, penguins spread oil on their feathers. The oil comes from a special gland near their tail feathers. Penguins molt, or lose their feathers, once a year.…
