1. Summarize educational approaches for patients with language barriers. Educational approaches for patients with language barriers can be overcome by first and foremost having an interpreter. Most practices do have interpreters to help patients and physicians to overcome this barrier. In my opinion, having children speak the English language for the parent is not a good source because if the news is bad the child will get upset. The child could also confuse the parent (considering that the parent is the patient) and the child can and possibly get the words mixed up. It would be better if the parent has a spouse or family member present that speaks English. We could also use the plastic models that are in the patients room or use dry erase boards to draw pictures. Another good idea is to make a binder full of different pictures so that the visual stimulation can help complete the nonverbal communication. By using nonverbal communication, we can use our finger to point to a certain area. It is another way of being able to watch the patient to make sure that they understand or “get the picture”.

Define and discuss six patient’s factors that have an impact on learning. Since we, as a society, have moved beyond the days of big, bulky cellphones, beepers, and not having portable equipment into the World Wide Web at lighting speeds, we still must keep in check with the older generations that they are not as knowledgeable as new concepts happen every day. The factors that I am about to discuss on factors that inhibit learning, will also help me to understand the older generation and their need for more time and learning
