The search for self-actualization is the true quest of life. It is much easier, particularly for
women, in this era of fast pace, equal opportunity, and court rulings to achieve this goal than in
past centuries. Through the juxtaposition of Adele and Edna, Kate Chopin’s novel The
Awakening illustrates the mental and psychological challenge inherent in breaking from
the norm. Adele, the epitome of a woman in the 1800’s, quietly accepts her life and culture as it
exists. Edna, on the other hand, struggles to break free of the cocoon of oppression and
expectation that surrounds and stifles her. Edna respects Adele and realizes that others also hold
her in high regard. However, Edna feels that
