Structural health monitoring systems (SHMS) incorporates mechanical and electronic systems in inspection and maintenance of bridge performance. A SHMS evaluates structural condition by monitoring loadings and other parameters. The results can then be used to plan and perform inspection activities. The evaluations further highlight the damages, their extent and modification. The system comprises of six integrated modules which are:
• Module 1 - the sensory system,
• Module 2 - the data acquisition and transmission system,
• Module 3 - the data processing and control system,
• Module 4 - the structural health evaluation system,
• Module 5 - the structural health data management system,
• Module 6 - the inspection and maintenance …show more content…
environmental sensors, this group consists of sensory devices for assessment of the surrounding including but not limited to temperature, pressure, humidity, wind and rain and even corrosion.
2. traffic monitoring sensors, this group consists of sensory devices for assessment of the traffic load on the bridge using dynamic motion stations, traffic cameras and dynamic strain gauges.
3. bridge monitoring sensors, this group consists of sensory devices for assessment of the bridges characteristics using various types of accelerometers, GPS, level sensors and strain gauges.
4. bridge response sensors, this group consists of sensory devices for assessment of the bridges responses to different transient loadings and other conditions such as dynamic and static strains, displacement, vibrations, and tilting amongst other parameters.
The basic purpose of the sensory system is to capture local and global data and translate in a format that is comparable with design specifications and incorporate the data into a forecasting model. It should also provide long term extraction of data consistently using up to date sensors that are effective under a range of environmental conditions. The use of electromagnetic sensors predominate over other sensors and cost effective in comparison with fiber optic data logging …show more content…
the data acquisition system, which is made up of several data acquisition units. These units can be fixed or portable. The fixed units are usually found on the deck and the towers. They receive and translate incoming data packets from all sensors with the exception of the corrosion cells, which sends its data to the portable data acquisition units. A typical data acquisition unit receives signals in analog or digital form which is then conditioned and converted to either analog or digital format depending on the unit and the requirements.
2. the local cabling network system, which is made from a copper cabling network and a fiber optic cabling network. The copper network carries signal from most of the sensors to the data acquisition units the rest of which is transmitted by the optic fiber network.
3. the global cabling network system, which is made of two networks: the electromagnetic one transmits signals from each data acquisition unit and the digital video network sends transmission from the traffic cameras. Both networks are made of high transmission capacity fiber optic cables.
