Persuasion Through Refutation A robber walked into a convenience store and walked up to the register pulls out a firearm and directs the cashier to give him his till. The cashier is shocked and puts his hands in the air then the robber yells at him to reach down and grab the till. When the cashier reaches down, he grabs a firearm instead of reaching for the till, and the scarred robber panics and runs away. Many people argue that stricter gun control laws could have prevented a criminal from walking into the store with a firearm in the first place. This argument is both a fallacy of exclusion and a fallacious appeal to pity. Suicide is an act and crime that has affected many people, but suicide is not stopped by gun control. First of all, there are many ways to commit suicide, and people have done it over the years by jumping off of buildings, poisoning themselves, cutting major arteries, hanging, and many other sad ways. The fallacious appeal to pity though is an argument or statement that is used to try to win support for an argument or idea by exploiting his or her opponent’s feelings of pity or guilt. This argument states that gun control will lead to fewer suicides because most suicides are committed with a firearm and tries to use suicide to bring support from many people who have suffered from the affects of someone who has committed suicide. Most people who commit suicide suffer from mental illnesses, loneliness, hatred, traumatic events, or many other feelings that make them feel like suicide is the only option. The truth is that these people do need help, but gun control does not fix their feelings or problems they have in their lives. The firearm does not cause suicide; it is caused by other feelings or events. The statement that gun control would prevent suicides is flawed and has many fallacies. Gun control is needed to a certain extent and the current laws that are in place are strict enough to prevent the crimes that we are able to prevent. Ultimately, gun control will not stop people from committing crimes by making stricter laws. Stricter laws affect the average law abiding citizen more then the criminals. Crime has always existed because humans are not perfect, but being able to have a firearm may be what prevents crime form happening around law-abiding families and citizens. In a perfect world, crime could be stopped by studying and understanding the criminals committing these crimes. Unfortunately, this world isn’t perfect and crime will continue on. Making stricter gun control laws is not the answer to preventing crime. The answer to preventing crime starts in each individual human
