The Setting:
“Stressed Out” by Twenty One Pilots was released in May 2015 along with their full album Blurryface. The meaning behind the song is about the transition into adulthood from childhood and having to live up to society’s expectations. The last couple of years has been a mark in history for fighting for individual rights and against society’s standards. 37 states have now legalized same sex marriage and people are beginning to stand up for their rights that they believe the government takes advantage of. The movement on feminism is also fighting back against what society has portrayed women to be. Advertisements and magazines are beginning to display the strong, intelligent side of women. But the bass drum does speed up and slow down throughout the song. The song opens up with a five beat drum theme that reintroduces itself throughout the whole song. It becomes a harmony when it is also accompanied by a sci-fi beat, however, this beat is not as mysterious or eerie compared to Blurryface’s leitmotif. Instead it is there so it can help combine Blurryface’s leitmotif with the rest of the song. The drum theme acts as a bass for the whole song. It does pause during the first part of the chorus, adding to the nostalgic feel, since the chorus is about wanting to be a child again. Because the drums pause you are focusing more on the first verse of the chorus which is, “Wish we could turn back time…to the good ol’ days.”. This is important because Twenty One Pilots does this intentionally so the chorus stands out and to make a slight shift in beats. The melodies and rhythms used in “Stressed Out” associate well with their lyrics. Although the song sounds very nonchalant for the most part. Especially when they rap about their past and stresses. But the beat then speeds up a tiny bit during the chorus when they wish they could go back to when they were kids. The increase of the speed of the beat acts as a statement of the chorus. The importance that people now a days are wanting to go back to their childhood because the stress society places on them is too

Twenty One Pilots’ album Blurryface captures the emotions and feelings almost everyone experiences, but is too afraid to express. With its multi-genre track list, Blurryface could not be identified as one genre due to the complexity of the melodies, off putting beat changes, and depressing lyrics. The album should have failed in the beast that is mainstream music. However, bandmates Tyler Joseph and Joshua Dun of Twenty One Pilots managed to take their polarizing sound and turn it into a thrilling success. Long before their debut into the music scene, the band duo from Columbus, Ohio, Twenty One Pilots started making their rounds playing small bars and clubs trying to create a fan base that would support what they do.…

When writing the song American Idiot Billie Armstrong wrote it from a spectator point of view because he lived through it and watched it everyday on television. Throughout the song he voiced his own comments and concerns on wondering how society was going to be able to move forward and away from what society and Bush were doing to the country. When I think of The Wombats, I think of odd-but-fun lyrics and upbeat, borderline psychedelic music, and the band's latest album, "Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life," provides just that. The first song on the album, "Cheetah Tongue," was pre-released as a single. The song itself is pretty simple, but the lyrics are very visual.…

Early in the book the schooling of Einstein is addressed and he is fascinated by and enjoys schooling. Then when he entered into the secondary schooling program he found the work too strict and tightly controlled. The song “School’s Out” by Alice Cooper fits this time of disliking school because it talks about not enjoying school and not saluting teachers, similar to the way Einstein disliked the fear and authoritative way teachers taught. Later Einstein borrowed notes from other college classmates because he often did not attend class. The strict authorities also were present in Germany’s government and that may have been why Einstein gave up his German citizenship and moved to Switzerland.…

Another writer, Alice Rawsthorn, asks what the true definition of an artist is in this modern world, deciding that it can be anyone. Through her piece, “Can Anybody be a Designer?” Rawsthorn discusses “Unnamed,” an exhibition held in South Korea. This exhibition explores innovation in places that one would normally never look; the code involved in a computer virus can be just as majestic as a rainbow barcode where each color signifies one of the four nucleotides of DNA (adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine). She argues, “the process [humanity] now recognize as design was practiced long before, whenever prehistoric men and women sought to improve their surroundings: say by making a clay bowl to drink from, rather than cupping their hands,”…

This album, like many others that The Chemical Romance had created, contains motifs of death, darkness, hopelessness, etc. which falls under the category of emo. Emo music (short for Emotional Music) is a growing subculture that is formed around emotional vulnerability, specifically the freedom of emotions (Baker & Bor, 2008). The rise of emo made the awareness of depression more prominent and is viewed as closely associated with each other. The mainstream media depicts MCR fans as being misguided as a result of the band’s music (Hill, 2011) much like Elvis Presley where people started to attribute misbehavior as the causal effect of the his music and dancing.…

Stressed Out is a song that delineates the discrepancy between childhood and adulthood. This song expresses the idea of stress surrounding moments of your adulthood, in relation to your childhood, where you're carefree and had an innovative imagination. The repetition of the line "Wish we could turn back time, to the good old days" is illustrating how much Tyler and Josh wanted to regress back to the days of their childhood. "When our momma sang us to sleep" indicates a moment of their childhood, which was recognized as the "Good old day." In addition, the line, "We used to play pretend, wake up, you need the money" shows Tyler and Josh reminiscing on the days of their childhood where they used to play pretend, now that they're an adult they…
