Stress Affects The Immune System

Improved Essays
Stress affects the immune system in two ways, physically and psychologically. One question you might ask yourself is, how does the body remain in good condition in response to physical and/or psychological stress? Looking at the immune system and its organs, “it contains billions of immune functioning cells’(HPC). The peripheral immune system protects the blood, lymph nodes, and spleen, while the endocrine system assists the Central Nervous System by producing hormones; and releasing the relevant ones that keeps us living. The most important protectors are the white blood cells that scan through the blood and tissue, to search for bacteria and viruses. “The white blood cells function is to begin the immune response” (HPC). For example, social stress increases nerve growth factor gene expression, which increases the growth of sympathetic nervous system neural fibers in the lymph node tissues that structure immune responses. At a later time, when stress is experienced again, more neurotransmitters will be released in the lymph nodes because of the increased number of neural fibers, which is a direct consequence of the social factor stress from the earlier time. The immune system responds more poorly to a viral infection as a result. This is just one example of how the environment is a crucial part of our gene expression and resulting…

Stress often hinders their functioning and long-term stress can eventuate in cell death. The immune system is our bodies system that protects us from viruses and other illnesses. Our immune system and central nervous system are linked by the bodies lymphocytes; the white blood cells that fight viruses (Hockenbury, Nolan & Hockenbury 2015). There is a continuous relationship between the nervous, immune and endocrine systems, so if one is affected like by stress, the others will be as…

Prolonged periods of high stress can be detrimental to health, mentally and physiologically (Wilkinson & Marmot, 2003). Specifically, individuals experiencing chronic stress often suffer from impaired mental ability to prioritise health and commonly develop unhealthy coping behaviours, which in turn negatively impact their health status (Marmot & Wilkinson, 2006). Moreover, chronic stress diverts energy and resources away from essential physiological processes, which are imperative for long-term health (Wilkinson & Marmot, 2003). Short-term, the physical impacts of stress go unnoticed, however accumulation of prolonged chronic stress can attack the immune and cardiovascular system, predisposing individuals to numerous infections and diseases such as, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, depression, and heart attack (Wilkinson & Marmot,…

Stress activates the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) to maintain homeostasis. The SNS stimulates the adrenal medulla to secret adrenaline and noradrenaline which is sent through the blood to increase heart rate, contractility and vasoconstriction, respectively. All these activity leads to an increase in blood pressure as the heart starts to pump harder. This is beneficial during short periods of stress because it stimulates the mind and body readying it for any sudden events.…

The body’s natural protection mechanism against infection from pathogen is not as effective as it can be, especially for individuals that have compromised immune response. The body’s immune response system has an essential resistance and adaptive immunity as its first line of defense. When the front-line defense (innate) immunity fails to protect the body against microbial pathogens the second line of defense (adaptive) which is more specific is activated (H. ,2012, September 11). The innate immunity contains different cell forms that generates a barrier stopping the pathogen from entering the body. If the pathogen successfully enters the body it then allows phagocytic cells to activate within the site of the infection destroying the pathogen.…

One of the important cells involved in defense is white blood cells, also called leukocytes, which come in two basic types (B cells & T cells) that combine to seek out and destroy disease-causing organisms or substances. When undergoing a stressful moment, the body releases cortisol which helps release energy, fight inflammation and regulate metabolism. The negative aspect to that is too much of it in the blood suppresses the immune system making you more susceptible to infection. That can lead to further health…
