Steroids are now playing a big role nowadays in sports, and especially baseball. Players are willing to sacrifice breaking rules, permanently damaging their bodies, and flat out cheating to be the best. For example, in recent news, last years National league batting champ, Dee Gordan, tested positive for performance enhancing substances. Another key player, who plays for runner up in the American League last year, Chris Colabello, also tested positive for using an anabolic steroid. This has become an epidemic in America’s pastime. Even though some or most of these players get caught, there are still the occasional players that do not get caught. So what really are steroids and what do they do to the body? Steroids are a form of synthetic testosterone that players put into their bodies to increase muscle mass so they can hit, throw, and run better than they regularly could. With increasing the levels of testosterone in the body it can throw the hormonal balance out of whack which can lead to some serious consequences. Dr. Kenneth Mautner of Emory University compares using steroids to playing russian roulette with the health of one’s body. He was quoted saying, "They are not good for you. It is like Russian roulette. Five people may take them and have no long-term problem. The sixth may end up dead." The side effects of using steroids is broad and plentiful. There are some minor one and some major side effects that occur. Some of these include the development of breasts, increased aggressiveness, dizziness, and joint and muscle pain. One really plays a game of chance when taking steroids because of the long list of side effects and health issues. Another risk players take when they own steroids is the fact that anabolic steroids are illegal to possess, sell, or own.
