I believe that stereotypes play a great role in contributing to prejudice. Stereotypes are over generalized understandings of an individual based on others that seem similar to them. They can be either positive or negative and often lead to disappointment, resentment, and irrational expectations. Stereotypes are automatically formed based on our interpretations of those around us.
Therefore, I believe that people in today’s society are predisposed to be prejudiced. I believe that stereotypes are rooted in the subconscious and that prejudice is its natural successor. An individual who is prejudiced is likely basing their feelings or expectations on a stereotype rooted in a lack of knowledge. By educating them, they will be able to look at the person and or group they are assessing from a more holistic perspective.
Affirmative action is passing a law to make sure that people are equally treated without regard to their race or national origin. This is meant to help people from different backgrounds and have equal opportunities in education and jobs.
