We must all admit that we prejudge at times however, this causes us to generalize and categorize and deter from our thinking skills. It is sad moreover that these presumptions are normally negative. This is called being stereotype. According to the essay “Don’t Let Stereotype Warp Your Judgments” written by Heilbroner, It is one way in which we define the world in order to see it. The questions nonetheless are: Is it right? Is it fair? Is it just? Were we born judgmental? In keeping with essay the answer to all those questions is ‘No” but, we have been sensitized. From a tender age we were exposed to such bad critical thinking unknowingly. There are major causes of stereotyping presented in the essay by Heilbroner that we rarely think about. He says that “Early in life, as every parent whose child has watched a TV Western knows, we learn to spot the Good Guys from the Bad Guys.” Simply that as a child we are made aware of what is bad or good based on our parents. The media is a powerful source of communication. It relays assumptions, unsupported evidence, and unjustified information and creates delusions. The movies that we find as entertainment and the books we read that are to enlighten us they like Robert said ‘warp’ our judgements.eg** We then grow up on these teachings inside of us and create pictures in our mind. Then to add with these misconceptions thrown on us we create satires. As he call them “half –joking, half-serious” stereotypes. We hear them and we repeat them because we find them funny but we rarely understand them or the effect that they can have on others. For example “Why did the white man visit the moon? He heard that the Indians had land there”, Do not be racist; be like Mario. He's an Italian plumber, who was made by the Japanese, speaks English, looks like a Mexican, jumps like a black man, and grabs coins like a Jew!, Why did President Obama get two terms? Because every black man gets a longer sentence and my uncle was a racist piano player, all his work sounded awful because he skipped all the black keys. Based all the comedy I’ve watched they are indeed made up of stereotype satires. I could imagine how uncomfortable one can be when one can relate to the joke. Would it still be funny if your being scrutinize in a negative way? If one was to evaluate the information presented by Heilborner carefully, how could one not understand …show more content…
Stereotyping does nothing but make us confuse which leads to nothing but corruption. Sadly it has become a part of us now and sometimes used as protection for ourselves and loved ones. Growing up being black itself comes with a lot of stereotypes. As we all may know that being black and dread has its additional negative highlights. As a child having dreads was always frowned upon even in a black society or even having the darkest complexion. At a tender age I was taught this by my family however though I questioned it, the answers were simply job security and how society would see me. In truth however, they feared the outcomes just of what they themselves were sensitized to. In the essay the writer presents evidence supporting and agreeing with my proof where he asks a rhetorical question “Are criminals more likely to be dark than blond?” but answers it later saying basically that a large percentage of reported suspicious characters are classified as black and based on criminologists sometimes that’s not the case. Can we be blamed however when based on the TV shows that we were brought up on that is what is being classified as bad. We begin to typecast since our childhood years. Also based on the essay it’s the minority “unpopular members” would be remembered, called on, then we the society step on. So when Blacks use skin lightens and straighten their hair who is to
