If the study was done in 2017, the result would be different. The study is also invalid because it claims that the girls dressed in swimsuits did not do well because they were wearing swimsuits. There could be many reasons why they did not do well, one being is that they felt uncomfortable doing math in swimsuits. This study also claims that the girls in swimsuits are not smart, but the girls in swimsuits and the girls in sweaters were both at the same university so that means that they are both equally smart. The second argument that Hanes states is that girls are listening to music that sexualizes them. Yes, there is music that is demeaning to young girls, but there is much more music that is empowering to women. For example, Beyoncé sang the lyrics, “Who run the world? Girls!”. Another song by Christina Aguilera has the lyrics “you are beautiful, in every single way”. Lady Gaga’s song, Born This Way, also has the lyrics “hold your head up, girl, and you’ll go far”. These are just a few examples of song lyrics that are good influences on young girls, there are many more songs like that. Because afterall, it is mom and dad who are there for their kids, not Anna and Elsa (Cummings).
