The process of obtaining embryonic stem cells is one that is quite problematic. It is not as easy as mining in a mine or collecting water from a lake. It takes a delicate process to extract these important cells. Embryonic stem cells come from human embryos. These embryos have an abundance of stem cells that can be used to help cure diseases and illnesses. One drawback though from taking these cells though is the life of potential human. When scientists take embryonic stem cells from embryos, a baby can no longer form. Stem cell research has been around for a while and has made leaps and bounds in the medical field. Scientists today are studying how to produce these stem cells, and how to use them in medical practice. While the research for stem cells has proven to be very valuable and could possibly save many lives, today's society looks down on this practice and viewed it as unethical. Times are changing and people are too, but people today cannot keep up with today’s technological advances and research. This often leads to a sense of uncertainty and misconception due to the lack of knowledge on the subject. People view the topic of stem cells as being unethical because most people do not support taking stem cells from embryos. These embryos come from a fertilized egg, and many believe that this is in a sense taking away a possible life. “The largest controversy with stem cell research is the use of an embryo. This deals with the controversies surrounding laws and beliefs regarding contraception, abortion, and in vitro fertilization” (Mandal). The controversy around the topic is whether or not the embryo is entitled to human rights, or more simply whether or not the bundle of cells are considered human. The debate on whether or not embryos are human is what delays the research of stem cells. “Some try to base such an argument on the fact that human beings develop from embryo to fetus to child. Every person was once an embryo, the argument goes, and there is no clear, non-arbitrary line between conception and adulthood that can tell us when personhood begins” (“Examining the ethics of embryonic stem cell research”). This argument is what is hindering the study of stem cells since there is no clear understanding of when someone is considered a person. This line between human and not human questions our morals and ethics. While there may seem to be lots of bad things about the way we get stem cells to use in medical practices, the benefit in doing so outweighs the cost of it. Embryonic stem cells have to capability to turn into any kind of cells in the human body.
