Introduction
Stem Cells have a lot of potentials to cure/heal the human body, but is it worth the cost? Embryonic stem cells have the potential to transform medicine. Scientist and doctors believe they could potentially treat a myriad of human conditions and diseases, such as spinal cord injury, type 1 diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases and many others. However, there are many issues and barriers to fulfilling this potential. Helping people walk again sounds like a miracle. Therefore the medical research of stem cells and its impact factor should be further studied and tested. Due to the medical benefits such as, the ability to cure a variety of diseases, and being able to possibly regenerate/replace cells. …show more content…
In fact, there are many kinds of stem cells in the human body, though some are differentiated to a specific function than that of others. Stem cells are commonly used to refer to the cells within the adult organism that renew tissue.” (Benjamin). Stem cells were first isolated “in 1997 by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions”. (Smucker). Newly added to the list of stem cell types is the Embryonic stem cell. Even though they were first isolated in 1997 little research with human cells were carried out due to federal restrictions. However Embryonic stem cells are unlike any adult stem cells. They are only found simply in the early stages of embryonic development three to five days of age. Embryonic stem cells are totipotent which mean they can form any type of adult cell or adult precursor. Precursor cells are stem cells that have developed to the stage where they are committed to forming a particular type of new blood cell. In addition, there is a stem cell which has properties that compare to the embryonic stem cell, it is the embryonic germ cell. This cell is derived from the primordial reproductive cells of the developing fetus. Many people believe stem cells are all in one category. However, all stem cells do not share common characteristics or sources and it is important to distinguish between various types of stem cells. According to the article, “embryonic stem cells can be derived by a number of methods”
