We shuffled through the library trying to find the perfect book until we came across the book, “Stella Luna”. The book fit all the children’s requests and it is one of my personal favorites as well. Before making my final choice, I referred back to the article “Understanding Children’s Responses to Literature” by Kiefer to help me pick the right book according to the ages and stages descriptions. According to the chart in early primary children need the warmth and security in family relationships. In the book Stella Luna, the author emphasizes on the idea of family. The role of what the momma bird in the story is important. Another characteristic the children corresponded to was their attention span was increasing. The children were able to sit through an activity or read aloud without getting distracted. The children responded really well to read alouds done by the cooperating teacher. Reviewing the book with the teacher we decided it was the right book because it included animals, friendship and family. The story was the right length for the children to sit and focus without getting distracted. It also fit in with the next unit in the class which helped them get prepared before the actual
