Abstract
Status epilepticus is a common medical emergency presentation to the emergency department. The seizures account for about 1% of all ED presentations and about 30% of neurological presentations. Most seizures terminate within 5 minutes and those that don’t are often prolonged and significant neuronal injury occurs well before 30 minutes.
This is a case history of a girl who presented with status epilepticus to the PCU of Lady Ridgeway hospital and managed successfully. She is a known patient with epilepsy and on regular treatment and follow up. She used to have breakthrough seizures but usually they settle within few minutes. This time it lasted for more than half an hour.
After admission to the PCU she was managed according to the advanced paediatric life support algorhythm and sent to ward.

She was managed in the acute care setting according to the status epilepticus management algorhythm. The fits settled after phenobarbitone IV infusion. She was continuously monitored for airway, breathing and circulation and interventions made during and after the seizures. The provoking factor for seizure was identified as a viral infection.
Disposition
