While every American in their right mind knows what the war on terror is, many don’t know what goes on with the many different terrorist organizations and where they came from or why they were made. This paper is to address the controversy of state sponsored terrorism and evaluate the effect this has had on the world through what it is used for
To begin it should be acknowledged as to what precisely state sponsored terrorism consists of. State sponsored terrorism consists of the government support of non-state actors engaged in terrorism. In other words the government pays terrorist organizations to interact in acts of terrorism that are a direct result of the country’s wishes (Government). This tactic is used to deal with problems that have sometimes unethical solutions that the government doesn’t want directly traced back to their doing. Pakistan is one of the best examples of users of state sponsored terrorism. While Pakistan had declared to be an ally of the United States they were believed to have been playing the United States on both sides of the game. Pakistan did help the U.S. hunt down head al Qaeda figures, but also supported many terrorist organizations in their own country, Afghanistan and India (Roggio). While they have attacked terrorist groups before, it was only because they were direct enemies to the state. They select which terrorist organizations are “good” by finding which ones support their foreign policy, if it’s there they give them money and supplies to spread their foreign influence (Roggio). While Pakistan is the example country, they definitely aren’t the only one. The United States is guilty of doing very similar acts in places such as Afghanistan (State). As many Americans know, al Qaeda is our main enemy in the war on terror, but what many also don't know is that al Qaeda was originally funded by America in Afghanistan as a fight against the spread of terrorism. …show more content…
We breastfed the organization to try and bend their will into ours using the islamic extremists to benefit our foreign interests which obviously backfired, but it did help lead to a stop of the spread of communism. This too, is where we must ask ourselves did it hurt us, or help us in the long run? America's foreign policy has been atrocious in the past 20 years, with a complete failure in Iraq that lead to the formation of ISIS and a deteriorating relationship with Russia (Roggio). Our foreign policy always seems to be whatever will benefit us the most, and I believe this to be the root of all state sponsored terrorism. Countries are not in the best interest of anyone but themselves, and they will go to drastic measures to get accomplished what they want to get done. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as mentioned before the support of state sponsored terrorism helped to stop the spread of communism into Afghanistan. Along with this, many countries use these tactics of taking over an insurgency group and instituting them with pushing for your support as a nation. A way to get dirty jobs done without having to clean up a mess. What usually happens though, as mentioned previously, these organizations evolve and once strong enough to do things on their own, break away from the thresh hold their founding country may have instituted, allowing them to push
