The look in the child's face, a look of hopelessness and feeling that there is no hope, makes the image more personal and brings out a sense of sympathy and horror within the viewer. It is this emotional response, and ability to cause change, that drew me to this photograph and that, I believe, caused it to win a Pulitzer Prize. While maybe one can see Grossfeld as being dishonest and wrong, in that he photographed these people instead of saving them, in the long run, this image was able to influence others to help and make a change to feed children and families who are unfortunate. It is this emotional power that the photograph has over its viewers that makes it so great.
The purpose of this is to show the good and bad of the world. These images will get you feeling happy to feeling sad in just a couple of seconds. This photo that is displayed is showing the emotions that the camera wants us to see. What makes this photograph different from many others taken of other widespread death was that child was in the center. Rarely do you see a starving child appearing to be making eye contact with the viewer, it immediately makes this photo more
