National and Global Impact
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has made a huge positive impact nationally and globally. Locally St. Jude has brought more than 14,710 jobs nationally and has brought more than 70,000 visitors to the area (Park, 2013). St. Jude along with their charitable organization ASLAC that aids in fundraising, both entities employs more than 4,400 people (Park, 2013). With all of this, St. Jude brings contributions to the local economy. Globally, is even better. Moody’s has stated in their 2012 rating that the sustainability of St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital is very high, and it all has to do with how they raise funds and how low their true debt is. They state that St. Jude has a positive outlook and a strong continued operating performance and ongoing growth through gift revenue, and this strengthens their balance sheet, along with expense flexibility that shows a potential for economic changes (Moody's, 2012). Some of the strengths that Moody’s mention is St. Jude’s substantial growth of unrestricted gift revenue (or donations). At the end of 2012, St. Jude’s revenue from donations averaged $739.9 million over the prior three years (Moody's, 2012). Another strength is St. Jude’s high reputation for being the leader in clinical care and industry leading research (Moody's, 2012). Low levels of debt due to their large financial resource base, is another strength of St. Jude Children’s Hospital (Moody's, 2012). Also mentioned on of St. Jude’s strengths is the impact on the day to day operations from healthcare reform is very manageable, and they are prepared for cut backs in federal research funding (Moody's, 2012). Jude Children’s Hospital has never been one to charge the way for healthcare reform and changes and implementation of new regulations. They lead by example. With high standards in research and treatment, and by sharing their research with the world, so children living with catastrophic diseases all over the world can benefit and be helped with the endless research that St. Jude conducts each and every day. St. Jude always follows whatever the U.S. Government deals them in the way of new laws and regulations implemented every year. St. Jude also stays compliant with any laws and regulations the state Tennessee enacts. They follow the tax codes to a tee so they are never having fines levied against them. They want all funds raised to go to their research and patient care, so staying complaint in all aspects of their organization is a complete must. St. Jude is completely transparent with the amount of funds they raise every year and how those funds are used. St. Jude stays completely complaint with state and federal guidelines and regulations so they continue their research and treatment of children with catastrophic diseases. This innovative organization is not into politics; they have set standards in research and treatment that is used through out the world, and that is one of many contributions they have made to the world. St. Jude feels that the funds they receive is better used on their patients and finding cures than going into the political arena to change the laws
