Urea Breath tests are done by having the patient blow into an aluminium bag labelled “0”; this is the control bag. They are then required to take a 13C-Urea tablet, and blow into a second bag labelled “10” ten minutes later. This is done to test for the presence of H.Pylori, which can cause stomach ulcers. The results are analysed by the amount of Urea present in the breath, if there is a higher level of Urea in the second bag than the control bag, then it means there is H.Pylori present, as it breaks down the Urea in the tablet and converts it into CO2.
