Location ranges from the orbit of Earth, the surface of the Moon and Mars, and even the upper atmosphere of Venus. As of right now there are no permanent space colonies in existence, but the concepts are still there albeit all have their advantages and disadvantages. Earth orbit colonies are advantageous due to the short travel distance from home, however because it is in orbit it will have a lack of natural resources to work with and will most likely rely heavily on Earth for imported resources. The Moon is the closest natural satellite to Earth, and has a low escape velocity. Colonies on the Moon have a shortage of volatiles necessary for life however such as hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon. As well, the low surface gravity is a concern is we do not yet know whether human health is damaged over time because of it. The Martian surface is roughly the equivalent size of all the dry land surface here on Earth. It also has no magnetosphere wrapping around the planet like Earth does, however the radiation could be combated by living underground, possibly in existing lava tubes. It is the best candidate planet in the solar system for terraforming, and its gravity is ever slightly better than the Moon’s, benefiting human health. These three colony options are the most popular and sought after ideas, but there are more obscure and less known …show more content…
The goal is real, and the global population needs to understand its grave importance before it is too late. We are slowly becoming overwhelmed with countless issues such as global warming, pollution and overpopulation. There are steps being taken to combat these global problems but even that will not be enough in the end. What needs to happen is an increase of money and interest in the space industry. This is the key to the survival of modern society and all of humanity, and with space colonies humans can live on and expand and spread intelligence along with beautiful cultures and people. We deserve to live on past a probable global extinction event, and ensure that our children and future generations will be safe. It is all going to start with grabbing the interest of the general
