With so many entertaining events and programs going on in today’s society it’s hard to remember that the world is at war with one another. When people look past such distractions they soon realize how much violence, corruption and sorrow is truly permeating the planet. When it comes to wars this year, there are 10 to really keep a look out for. Out of those 10, though, one seemed quite interesting and that is the South Sudanese civil war.

A year after the country gained its independence, the Sudanese government signed a nonaggression pact with the South as well as shut the South’s oil export pipelines down. Situations like this and disagreements over topics like oil, trade, and security deals caused many conflicts over a number of years. These conflicts resulted in the present-day war in South Sudan, which began in December of 2013, making this the third civil war to be had for the South. The cause of this war is primarily due to Salva Kiir, the current president of South Sudan since 2011. His accusation against vice president Riek Machar is what precipitated a war. In January 2014, a ceasefire agreement has been signed between the South Sudanese government and its rebels, but the agreement had been broken countless times along with failed attempts of peace talks.
