South Park Satire

Even if you don’t watch South Park, you’ve probably seen the inappropriate, yet hilarious cartoon late at night, maybe two in the morning. The pre-teen, animated, round boy characters dressed in brightly colored clothing bounce around telling their offensive jokes. This show offends everyone, but I feel that anyone who finds humor in anything, would laugh at at least something in this show regardless of how crude it may be. South Park has all the humor we enjoy, but would never admit to liking. Because it is so offensive, it is funny, and that is why people will always continue to watch it.
We all love South Park because it’s the kind of comedy we would never admit to finding humor in, but we do. The show jokes on racism, sexism, and the plain old nasty jokes thirteen-year-old boys laugh hysterically at. There is things we would never confess to laughing at. Us humans find humor in what offends us. All comedians tell jokes that are highly inappropriate and crude, just like the South Park creator, and that is why it is still on air.

There is an episode in season 19 where a mormon family moves to the town the boys live in and one of their favorite things to make fun of are mormons. Of course they make fun of the family, but the mormon boy in the family explains how it might be crazy to people the things that they believe in, however he has a loving family and friends and he has being mormon to thank for that. In another episode, the main focus is Tourette’s Syndrome. The Tourette’s Syndrome Association later commented that the subject was well researched and a clever way to bring awareness to the public. The “Timmy 2000” episode focuses on disabilities in which one of their own, Timmy, is highlighted. They focus on making sure he is part of the group rather than feeling like an outcast, and it is made clear that he is happy being himself regardless if he is different from the rest or not.

Webster dictionary defined political correctness as “agreeing with the idea that people should be careful to not use language or behave in a way that could offend a particular group of people.” This redirect in contemporary America is currently being expressed through comedy. Many comedians, such as Daniel Tosh, push the limit by making offensive jokes their sort of calling card. They are doing this to combat political correctness. Many comedians of late night comedy have used this style of humor as shock value, and it is a mirrored style from many comics before them. But with the style more ruthless, it seems there is a lack of civility in comedy. Although many found the tweet is funny, others were outraged by the disrespectful remark. Shortly after the mean response, the tweet was removed from the news station’s twitter feed, and an apology sent out. What people might have defined as a small disagreement in the difference of opinion, the removal of the tweet was a small step in the right direction to renewing civility.…

The twelfth and thirteenth episodes of South Park’s tenth season, “Go God Go” and “Go God Go XII”, work as pieces of comedy because they effectively use humorous triangular formats. Both episodes satirize fanaticism, especially in regards to religion and atheism. The majority of the humor in these episodes, as well as other South Park episodes, results from a triangular relationship. The three parties involved in this relationship are the audience, the show’s writers and creators, and the characters. Each of the characters is not aware that they are characters in a television show and they do not usually find humor in the predicaments they become involved in.…
