The book Solito by Javier Zamora tells the emotional story of the very difficult story of crossing the border as a 9-year-old boy by himself. Javier's story is a special one because of his age and how very small the percentage of people crossing the border are unaccompanied minors; only about 5% of the people crossing are. Javier's story talks about his struggle with the journey and how he can find a new family while trying to get to his actual family. The central theme of Solito by Javier Zamora is losing people you care about can be hard and this is continually developed throughout the story by the author's use of internal conflict.

A recurring thought that happens throughout all of Solito is that losing people you care about can be hard; it is shown in the story with the author's use of internal conflict. His actions were often foolish; clouded by his long-lived fantasy of seeing his mother again, but they were human. We often make irrational decisions driven by emotions, biases, and societal pressures. Enrique's journey exemplifies this human tendency to act against our own best interests and sometimes avoid learning from our experiences, whether it's risking our lives for a dream or perpetuating harmful cycles of poverty and separation. Reflecting on Enrique's story, I can't help but feel a sense of frustration at the systemic failures and societal attitudes that perpetuate the hardships faced by migrants like him. It's disheartening to see how easily we overlook the humanity and dignity of individuals like Enrique, reducing them to statistics or political talking points.…

In Mexico during the early 1980’s, a group of young siblings living in poverty tell an important story of the immigrant experience and the drives behind migration. Reyna Grande’s, The Distance Between Us, is a memoir written with the recurring appeal to the reader’s pathos. Grande uses the rhetorical strategy to keep the reader’s interest and to help them make personal connections to the story. Grande’s use of pathos helps to show not only the importance of understanding the immigrant experience, but also the importance of following your dreams. For example, the first chapters of the memoir are predominately about Grande and her siblings’ experience living with their Abuelita Evila in Mexico.…

In the novel, the writer often compared the team’s predicament to a game of rugby, noting that they would need to utilize the same tactics that they used in rugby in order to survive. He stated that rugby was a complex game that, “required sound strategy, quick thinking, and agility” (Parrado 14). This shows that rugby is symbolic for the strategies and techniques that the team would have to utilize in order to be successful in the Andes as well. The team would have to trust each other, think quickly, and use sound strategy both to move the ball on the rugby field as well as they would to come up with a plan to survive the Andes, rationing their food and quickly constructing shelter while relying on each other to do what is necessary. Moreover, the author uses a very serious and grave tone in the book in order to establish a depressing mood.…

The Mexican Revolution was another example of this universal crisis between the individual and the collective. This “aspiration” of the Revolution is complicated by internal conflicts and contradictions shown throughout the film Vamonos con Pancho Villa. The lack of a consistent heroic cause or passion is evident; particularly in regards to the “lions” of San Pablo (Rodrigo, Tiburcio, Fatso, Calf, Martin, and Maximo), when they do not offer any valid justification as to what is driving them to join the revolution. Their lack of individuality is reinforced by their inability to collectively coalesce around their leader’s values. One assumes that the revolutionaries as organized and seemingly ambitious they are, would be portrayed as the heroes; this film does the exact opposite; it renders them as “savages” (Robe), especially the leader, Francisco “Pancho” Villa” through his cruelty and indifference towards his own men.…

The events of the novel are very chaotic and filled with confusion, but also offer moments in which the characters are allowed to experience calmness and peace before being reintroduced to turmoil. Nevertheless, the moments of peace, despite how brief they might seem, are greatly appreciated. The characters, as well the audience, are only able to enjoy these moments because there have been multiple hardships that previously had to be confronted beforehand. The purpose of using Ursula and Jose Arcadio Buendia to serve as doubles for these themes is to demonstrate that one can have more control than the other for so long, and that the two are connected. Although it is impossible to truly escape chaos, there are periods of peace to look forward…
