From what I have seen, these videos showcase four vastly different family dynamics.
It appears that all the clients are mandated to come into services. The first is a man who is mandated to come in because of his violent behavior with his girlfriend and his use of substance. Also the next man has issues with staying sober and disappointing his grandmother. He looks to his grandmother for her approval. The next couple man has issues with drinking and being able to function with his job and his family. He got a DUI while out with coworkers and his wife second-guesses his decision-making skills because of it. Lastly, is a couple where the husband and wife has been separated for some time due to the husband being locked up in jail. The client wants to change because he has two kids with his wife. But he ultimately has to want to change for himself and not someone else. The theorist within the context of the case studies benefited from using solution focused therapy with hints of family therapy. The theorists were able to get the clients to thinking about changing and used family as a motivating factor. If these individuals did not have family ties there would have been no incentive to change. Identify three techniques used in the video series based on the approach of this particular counseling model. Explain why you would use each technique and what you would hope to achieve through doing so. Include any empirical evidence supporting your decision. You may use additional resources from the Lamar University Library and the video on techniques in the YouTube channel. In the video counselors showcased several techniques that helped clients to reflect on previous situations in their lives. Theorist can be seen helping clients to figure out what they want out of their lives through microanalysis of their conversations. This technique allows counselors to gain a baseline for their clients through feeler questions. Once counselors establish a baseline with clients they are able to read past the defense mechanism by taking notice of body language and micro expressions. Also theorist can be seen providing the miracle question where a counselor asks clients if they went to sleep and woke up in the morning and a miracle happened what would be different. This technique allowed for clients to see how different things would be if all the problems were all solved. …show more content…
Solution focused therapy has a lot of advantages when it comes to dealing with clients who are in the stage of change when they are open to change. I think that the stage of change is often overlooked in solution focused therapy due to the fact that therapist don’t care much for the past and look to bettering the future. But the past tells us where we are currently at and if we believe that we need to change. If therapists do not address the stage of change clients are in I believe that they will not achieve long-term success.
Reflect on your learning experience related to this theory. Which aspects of the theory are attractive to you and which aspects do you disagree
