There are several ways in which the people at the mission school, attempted to remake the Omaha boys into white people. The greatest contrast between their experiences is the fact that her parents chose to send her to the school. In fact, being socialized in American society was so important to her family that her grandfather refused to speak Lakota in front of her. Her grandfather’s viewpoint was due to his desire for her not to struggle to transition into American society, unlike his experience with the Indian boarding school. Unlike, the school in The Middle Five she went to an all-girl school. At school in addition to subjects covered in a typical American education she learned about Opera and had tea every day. Along with her education, her teachers were of a higher quality, since they all had doctorates, for the teachers in The Middle Five were probably missionaries without teaching experience. In addition to her time as a student there are differences in her experiences as a teacher. Even though the superintendent in The Middle Five was strict, he pales in comparison to the remnants of punishment at the school before she taught, which included jail cells and the giving of drugs to students who acted out. Where is his three main arguments against the payment of reparations?
1. Reparations is bad social ethics, for slavery is too serious of a problem to be put on a paycheck. In addition, the act of giving out reparations would trivialize slavery.
2. His second point is that the payment of reparations is bad racial politics. Payment will not help white and black relations.
3. Reparations are diversion from the real problems, for once a payment is given the real problems could easily be written off. We should not go the easy way
