In the United States more than half of all pregnancies are unintended. Unintended pregnancy is when it is either untimed or unwanted. If a woman wanted to become pregnant in the future but not at the moment she became pregnant it’s untimed but if she didn’t want to become pregnant at any time in the near future or at the time it is unwanted. According to the National Survey of Family Growth of 2006-2008, 29% of pregnancies were untimed, 19% were unwanted and of these 43% ended in abortion. (Moss D., Synder M.J. & Lu L.D, 2015) Women have to make a difficult decision of choosing between delivering the infant and choosing adoption or raising the infant and having an induced abortion. This is a complex decision with many social factors influencing women. It can cause uncertainty and mixed feeling and option counseling would help provide informative options and unbiased support. Abortion should be attainable procedure for women from any background in the United States. Abortion is a safe procedure that is performed very often in the United States with minimal risks compared to women who deliver a newborn. In the United States from 1998 to 2005 mortality among women who delivered a newborn was 8.8 per 100,000 and morbidity in induced abortions were 0.6 per 100,000. (Raymond EG, Grimes DA. 2012). Unintended pregnancies are so common that the option of abortion should be legal, accessible and safe. A woman should also be able to receive support and assistance if she decides to raise the infant or give the infant up for adoption. Women should be given all the information and options to make her decision less stressful. There are many contributing factors that will influence her decision, education, age, relationships and socioeconomic status. Overall, unintended pregnancies have increased. Although in teens the number has decreased due to accessible contraceptives and increased use of contraceptives during sex. There was an increase of unintended pregnancies from 40% to 45% in older women between the ages of 25-29 as well as women over 30. (Finer, L., & Zolna, M. 2014) One influencing factor is education; women who did not finish high school had a higher rate of unintended pregnancies as well as a higher number of unintended birth compared to women who had a college education. This can be related towards the lack of correct information or fewer resources. Women with a high school degree and/or a higher education had higher rates of abortion compared with those who had a lower level of education. Unintended pregnancies may result in the person contemplating her decisions, which can affect her educational aspirations whether she forfeits them or not. There is a pattern in the number of unintended pregnancies and relationship status. Married women’s unintended pregnancies rates are half than the number of unintended pregnancies among unmarried women. In a study women who called a post- abortion hotline shared the desire to be mothers but the lack of financial and partner support which lead to deciding an abortion. (Garbers, Meserve, Kottke, Hatcher, & Chiasson, 2013). Women want to assure stability for future children or existing children; 60 percent are already mothers.
