When people compare themselves to other people, they look at certain qualities and skills that the others may possess. When examining these qualities and skills, they can only experience their perception of the comparison. The perception of the comparison is either negative or positive based on skills or qualities they lack. When the perception of the comparison is negative, emotions like envy develop.
