Snowboarding Sometimes we all just want to get outside in the winter, but we don’t want to do the same old stuff. Well, I suggest snowboarding. This is a fun active sport that never gets old, and it has a very interesting past. For example, the very first snowboard was just a piece of plywood and a string! So read on to learn more about snowboarding.
First of all, it is important to know the basics of snowboarding. Before the snowboarder goes snowboarding, they will need to know what equipment to get. First of all, a board is needed. The type and brand will depend on the snowboarder’s personal style. Next snowboarding boots will be needed. To protect against the cold snowboarders should have a coat, gloves, and snow pants. It all started with some plywood. M.J. Burchett made a snowboard with horse reins and a clothesline for bindings. He could be seen surfing down hills trying out his invention. About 30 years later, an eighth grade student named Tom Sims created a snowboard which he called the “Ski Board”. Since he loved to skateboard, he decided he wanted to do it in the winter as well as summer, so he made a round plank with a nose kick on the front. He also put carpet on the top for traction for his feet, and below he put candle wax so it would slide easily through the snow. However, snowboarding didn’t catch on until 1965 when Sherman Poppen tried to get his kids to go outside by making a snowboard. His wife called it the “snuffer” because it was a surfboard that was for snow. He had it patented 6 months later. Some people didn’t think snowboarding was safe, and they tried to ban snowboarding.     The first fiberglass board was built in 1946 by Pete Peterson and consisted of a hollow plastic mold, with a redwood stringer, and sealed with fiberglass tape. The introduction of these new materials into the surfing world once again led to many surfers modifying their current boards or designing new ones in order to get the best performance, one of these surfers being Bob Simmons who built the ‘sandwich’ surfboard which consisted of a styrofoam core, encased in a thin layer of plywood, with balsa wood rails coated in fiberglass. The development of these ultra-light foam boards allowed many more people to become involved in the sport ultimately leading to its explosion in the 1960’s. The surfboards of this era, whether wood or foam, typically ranged between nine and eleven feet, which is significantly shorter than many of the older solid wood boards.
