Smallpox has been declared eradicated by the World Health Assembly. This may be considered internationally the biggest achievement in public health.
What is it? Smallpox is a serious infectious disease. About 3 of 10 people who caught it died because of its serious attack on your body. The disease is caused by the variola virus. Signs of smallpox include: Body Aches, High fever, vomiting, rashes, etc. The transmission of this disease is usually spread by coming in contact with another infected persons’ open and oozing wounds. Even sometimes it could be airborne so no one would be safe if they were in any close vicinity of an infected person. (Fun Fact: the disease seems to date back to the egyptian period, but only started first vaccinating citizens in 1796) Should i worry? There are new ways. Variolation was the first form of treatment which involved material from smallpox sores to be given to non infected people to help the body naturally fight it. Now a days, if you choose to receive the vaccine you would not be infected with the actual virus but only something much weaker that will help you fight it off.
