This shows that they neglect or are ignorant of the evidence that has caused it. As discussed in Michael Gomez’s Reversing Sail, during African antiquity Africans were looked upon favorably (Gomez 13). It was also implied that the darker one’s skin was, the stronger of an impression (of superiority and power within own culture) they had on the Greek and Roman traders (Gomez 13). In American Slavery, slaves were split up into groups by skin color for the assignment of tasks. Lighter slaves, particularly women were either given lighter or tasks that require more intellectual engagement because they were considered delicate and higher in social rank. Darker slaves were made to do very strenuous fieldwork because they were considered symbols of strength (in manual labor), but more inferior. These dynamics have been professed in modern times as light-skinned women gain advantages in terms of beauty status and romantic relationships, while dark-skinned women are typically viewed as more authentic members of their own racial/ethnic groups. In the event that a member of lighter or darker skin lack either of these components, competition arises and all relationships amongst those of African descent are endangered. Many people fantasize about having mixed or light skin children. Others only wish for “blue black” children. Because people of brown skin (not extremely light or extremely dark) tones seemingly have the best of both worlds, much argument has not been provided. Some times the people treat the light skin child better than the darker. Sometimes if a lighter skin child is the only light skin child or person in the family they feel left out. Studies find that there are in fact varying levels of appreciation for skin tones based on personal beliefs. Based on the conversation with Dr. Leeds and Dr. Blay, one could infer that oftentimes persons of opposite skin tones are offended if one skin tone is “overly” gratified. The students sought to understand why that is so, and why people get offended when one skin tone is uplifted or taken pride in. Additionally, they did not understand why “light skin” people are the most celebrated in several societies. This reflects back to the dominant elites depositing more accessible and “believable” knowledge (propaganda) in to the minds of people
