No one was to make their own decisions or stand up for what they believed in. It was a sin to be yourself because being yourself was a sin that could get you punished for a very long time.

It was always said to them that “There are no men but only the great WE.” (Chapter 9, Paragraph 7) They were taught that everything had to be done together at all times. If anyone choose to say how they felt out loud, they would get punished for it because it’s a sin. Equality and his friend the Golden One, discovered light for the first time. He wants to show his brothers as a gift what he had created but then he realizes that they wouldn’t understand it or believe him. “They would see nothing, save our crime of working alone, and they would destroy us and our light.” (Chapter 5, Paragraph 9) They wouldn't understand it because he created it all by himself without the help of his brothers. They would wonder how he did such a thing and destroy it, and not only would they destroy it but he would get punished very bad. For the first time, Equality actually cares about getting punished.
