The relationship between simplicity and complexity is a very common discussion that takes place in architecture. Architects are usually inclined to look at either simplicity or complexity separately. There are not many architects who study both of them together as a whole. Some architects or philosophers believe that there is a fine line between complexity and simplicity, while others believe that simplicity and complexity are interchangeable. Simplicity and complexity are usually perceived as two extreme ends of the same spectrum, therefore making it a great challenge to create pure simplicity or pure complexity without the need for them to coexist.

The opera house is considered complex due to its shape and choice of materiality. You can clearly see that the focus of the building was the form first and then the function. She created a simple program that focused mainly on the main auditorium. She made sure that the central auditorium space was easily accessible from all side. The degree of simplicity that is present in the program of the opera house proves yet again that she focused more on the form and designated more of her time designing the form rather than thinking deeply about the function. The combination of complexity and simplicity that took place in the design process of this building reflect back on Gregotti’s argument, that explains that simplicity and complexity exist …show more content…
To some, Wright’s style might look complex, while to others it might look quite simplistic. Wright has his own specific style when it comes to architecture. In fact, he actually named that style the prairie style, because he used it so often, that it has become his own signature look. Wrights buildings are usually first perceived as quite complex due to the unusual division of spaces and the unique exterior shape. Taliesin West is a famous building of his located in Scottsdale, Arizona. The building follows his signature prairie style, and his unusual way of dividing up spaces. At first glance, someone might think that Taliesin West is a complex building, but once you have seen or researched about all Wrights buildings, you would realize that all of his buildings follow that same specific style, therefore making his style iconic. Wright’s style helps support Norman’s argument. Norman believes that complexity can be treated as simplicity that needs further interpretation, therefore Taliesin West is a simple building that needs to be further explained. Once someone is familiar with Wright’s style, they will find every building of his simple, since it follows the same primary
